Ready for use in the United Kingdom
The link with the UK version of the WAIS-III is straightforward. UK norms for the WAIS-III are the same as in the US.
Therefore, the relationship between the WASI and the WAIS-III will be equivalent in the UK
For the WISC-III, some minor differences were found in the younger ages for the UK sample in 1992 (i.e., UK children up to the age of 7 years scored slightly higher than their US peers).
Therefore, although some caution is advised for children below the age of 7, overall, the relationship between the WASI and WISC-III will prove to be an invaluable in educational and clinical settings.
You Choose Four- or Two-Subtest Format
WASI is unique because it allows you to choose whether to administer the four- or two-subtest format. This flexibility gives you control over administration time and depth of the assessment.
The four-subtest form results in FSIQ, VIQ, and PIQ scores and can be administered in as little as 30 minutes.
The PIQ score includes two different types of performance measures for richer information Matrix Reasoning, for measuring nonverbal fluid abilities and Block Design, for measuring visuomotor/coordination skills.
The Vocabulary and Similarities subtests compose the Verbal Scale and yield the Verbal IQ, which is a measure of crystallised abilities.
The two-subtest form provides an estimate of general intellectual ability and can be administered in about 15 minutes.
This form includes Vocabulary and Matrix Reasoning. It provides only the FSIQ score.
The four-subtest form can be administered in just 30 minutes, and the two-subtest form can be given in about 15 minutes. Matrix Reasoning provides a measure of nonverbal fluid abilities.
Parallel Items Maximise Clinical Utility
All WASI items are new and parallel to their full Wechsler counterparts. As in the full Wechsler battery, Block Design consists of a set of 13 modelled or printed two-dimensional geometric patterns that the examinee replicates within a specified time limit using two-colour cubes.
The Matrix Reasoning subtest is similar to the WAIS-III Matrix Reasoning subtest (there is no counterpart in WISC-III); the Similarities subtest is parallel to the WISC-III and WAIS-III subtest but includes low-end picture items to extend the floor of the scale.
Another new feature of Wechsler Abbreviated is the oral and visual presentation of words in the Vocabulary subtest.
The Vocabulary subtest also has picture items that were designed to extend the floor of the test.

The Wechsler ability tests are restricted to Clinical Psychologists, Educational Psychologists and Psychologists with a relevant PhD.
Other psychologists in training can have access to the tests only under the supervision of an appropriately qualified Psychologist.
Under no circumstances should other professionals be given access to the Wechsler materials.
